Description:
Working ‘in conference’ with Instant Café Theatre and a group of Malaysia’s finest Actors, Writers, Directors and Choreographers, Happy Dagger Theatre have spent the past 10 weeks on a journey towards an open space that allows the fundamental questions of theatre to be asked. Using Farid Ud-in Attar’s The Conference of the Birds, the workshop process has been a mirror to the text itself with all the failures and triumphs, doubt and realisation, falling-away and joy that the poem explores. Voice and Neutral Mask classes combined with theatre devising techniques and selections of one of the world’s great mystical poems have created a rich theatrical tapestry that allows the audience a glimpse of how the self may be dissolved into a greater oceanic whole. Will the birds arrive at their destination? Who will be there at the end? Come witness the culmination of Happy Dagger Theatre’s three-month residency in Malaysia as the birds make their final journey to the origins of theatre and the heart of the audience.
Happy Dagger Theatre are resident artists with Instant Café Theatre. Their Asialink residency, supported by Australia Malaysia Institute and The Australia Council is exposing them to other collaborative approaches and working methods especially with regards to physical storytelling and instant creation from constant chaos.
