Description
Where there are two, there is…co-existence, discordance, parallelism, dependence. Explore the age-old theme of duality through intricate bharatanatyam dance performed by locally and internationally-renowned dancers.
Programme:
Aarambam: introduces various aspects of duality – co-existence, discord, parallelism and dependence – through nritta (pure dance).
Performed by: Seema and Deva Priya
Choreography: Neila Sathyalingam
Uma and Ganga: depicts the co-existence of Lord Shiva’s two consorts Ganga and Uma (also known as Parvathy) within his body and portrays the contrast between the two women’s natures and origins, Ganga, born as a forceful river out of a burst of energy from the sky and Uma born of the earth.
Choreographed & performed by: Shijith and Parvathy
The Other Woman: portrays the rivalry and discord between two rajadasis (court dancers) who are in competition with each other to gain the support of the same patron
Performed by: Seema and Deva Priya
Choreography: Ajith Das
Duality in Divinity: illustrates four dual relationships involving deities – that between the two sons of Lord Shiva, Ganesha and Skanda, one symbolising wisdom and the other valour, both intrinsic attributes of divinity, that between patient Sita and fiery Draupati, the heroines of the two Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharatha, that between deities Vishnu and Shiva who came together to create a third, Hariharasudha, and finally, the figure of Ardhanari comprising two perceived aspects, that of a male and female, within the single body of Shiva.
Choreographed & performed by: Shijith and Parvathy
