KLDA Gala Ball 2009
8 August 2009
Wisma OCM

By Jane Kong

When I was first arrived at Wisma OCM, I was warmly welcomed by the committee members of KLDA. It was certainly a pleasure to be introduced to Mr C.C. Lai, a man who turned out to be generous, friendly and kind.  I was escorted to my seat and helped myself to a scrumptious buffet served at the traditional Chinese music-filled Fame Hall.  For those who had finished dinner, there was an open dancing session at the Superstar Hall, which went on until 8.30pm.  Guests were allowed to dance during dinner time and there were surprise gifts for the happy dancing couples who enjoyed their dance most.

After the open dancing session, Mr. C.C. Lai gave his welcome speech to show his appreciation for the attendance of guest and VIPs. The spectacular performances soon commenced with the first performance lead by the Mr. C.K. and Ms. Elayne. The performance, called the 1Malaysia Dance Surprise, was a combination of local music and ballroom dancing.  The 1Malaysia Dance was truly a Malaysian one. Although it drew inspiration from ballroom dance, it was artfully infused with Malaysian culture. I was truly amazed with the dancer’s creativity and inspiration.

Many enjoyable performances followed - the Viennese Waltz ‘Champion Dance’ by Samuel Sum and Chew Su Fen; Foxtrot by Calvin and Jane Loh; Ballroom Formation Dance by the KLDA Happy Feet; Rumba dances by Alfred and Carmen Choo; Jive by Vernon Choo and Cheah Yen Thing; The Waltz and Tango by M. and Mrs. Osamu Sakai from Japan; Ballroom Special by Lim Sae Min and Nathalee; Paso Doble by Alfred and Carmen Choo, and Vernon Choo and Cheah Yen Thing; Quick Step by Samuel Sum and Chew Su Fen; Group Line Dance by Joy Club Dancers; Individual Line Dance by Lim Sae Min; Michael Jackson Special by David Chieng, and last but not least the Latin Formation by KLDA Idols.

The KLDA Happy Feet were performing.

The dance performance that I personally like best was the Rumba dances by Alfred and Carmen Choo. My eyes were fixated on them, looking at the passion that can be seen through their eyes and movements.

It was a memorable event for me since it was the first time I get to attend a ball like this. KLDA Ball is organized annually but this time it’s different because this year, KLDA will be raising funds for the Dancesport Scholarship Project. The dance scholarship will be awarded to talented, uprising and potential dancers of Malaysia to help them to further pursue their dance career and realizing their dream of becoming a world renowned dancer in the near future.  The proceeds of the tickets sales of the ball will go to the Dancesport Scholarship Project - it was a great way for the audience to support the scholarship while enjoying themselves.  I for one, certainly look forward to the next KLDA Ball.
