Pina Bausch, 1940-2009
German contemporary choreographer, Pina Bausch died on 30 June 2009, five days after being diagnosed with cancer. The 68-year old choreographer was artistic director of her company in Wuppertal for more than thirty years, and was one of the most influential figures in the European Tanztheater movement.
Bausch's choreography often featured themes of brutality, pain and alienation pierced by flashes of humour, which she developed by drawing from her dancers' memories and fantasies. Her works also became famous for their large scale sets: the stage covered in a thick layer of peat for her Rite of Spring, or 20-foot walls of mud in Victor.
With her controversial works, Bausch was often reviled but just as often succeeding in inspiring generations of dancers and choreographers, both in Malaysia and abroad. While her sudden death is shocking, her work will continue to amaze for many years to come.
