Description:
The keyboard and phone line are extensions of our lusts. Pens and papers give birth to secrets. In this office, everything becomes so extraordinarily empty, even words fail. And without words and symbols, our imagination dies. In the mean time, a new game is being played, a game of metaphors. Perhaps no one can escape this path except through the magic of imagination.
About Kwang Tung Dance Troupe:
Kwang Tung Dance Troupe has been established for 30 years and was founded on 15th June 1980. In 2010, the troupe was upgraded to Kwang Tung Dance Company. The company’s initial focus gravitated more towards folk and traditional Chinese dance. Following its development, in recent years, the company changed its direction to focus on modern and contemporary dances. In 2005, the company had its first open audition to scout for talent.
The company’s vision is to promote the local performing arts dance scene, nurture dancers and create a dance platform as a way to gradually transform itself into a professional dance company.
Some of the memorable and significant performances by the company include the yearly members’ showcase entitled KUA BU series, “To Dance or Not to Move” in 1995, “Qing” in 2002, “Emotions in Motion” in 2004, “In-Transit” in 2005, and “Hiding Love” in 2007. The company has also participated in APEC guests welcoming 1998, SUKOM Closing Ceremony 1998, TARI 1998, opening ceremony of the launching of Istana Budaya 1999, Formula One Malaysia 1999, TARI 2000, TARI 2002, Malaysian Dance Festival 2005, and TARI 2007.
In recent years, the company has been recognized for its level of performing and has received many nominations in the Annual BOH Cameronian Arts Awards, which is organized by Kakiseni, a reputable local arts portal.
The company first earned recognition in 2004 through “Emotion in Motion” for the nomination of the Best Dance Performing Group. “In-Transit” notably received 6 nominations under the following categories: Best Artistic Direction, Best Choreography in a Mixed Bill, Best Performer, Best Music & Sound Design in Dance, Best Lighting Design and Best Set Design. “The 7th (Kua Bu- Evolving Horizon)” was nominated for Best Choreography in a Mixed Bill. In the Annual BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2008, Kwang Tung Dance Company won the following categories: Best Group Performance, Best Performer and Best Choreography in a full length through “HIDING LOVE”.
