More Dance Fun with Pebbles 6
5 December 2009
The Actors Studio, Lot 10

Rivergrass Dance Academy organized an annual dance production ‘More Dance Fun with Pebbles 6’ at The Actors Studio, Lot 10. The principle of Rivergrass Dance Academy, Mew Chang Tsing gave a short introduction of the production and mentioned that it features contemporary dance in improvisational form, which are performed by talented little ones and the not-so little ones.
She explained that improvisation in dance is a tool to create dance movements so that dancers can open up their minds and explore freely. Improvisation encourages people to dance as creatively as possible. This improvisation dance performance did not disappoint me and audiences.
Due to my own narrow view, when the host announced that the guest appearance of Nanyang University Alumni Association – The Golden Group was to present a hip-hop dance titled ‘Cap Ladies’, I was wondering whether they could pull it off. This is because hip hop is a strong and powerful dance; it is hardly appropriate for old people, especially older women. The dancers of Golden Group wore bright yellow t-shirts and black caps making them look younger and more energetic. Their dance movements were not so powerful compared with those performed by young people but they had the spirit that every dancer should have, and they showed that they were very much young at heart when they are dancing. They seem to be telling the audiences that hip-hop does not only belong to young people, but to everyone!
The most attractive item was Dance Suite Red On choreographed by the principle of Rivergrass, Mew Chang Tsing. All dancers in this item wore red clothes to perform on the stage. Their dance movements brought out sense of passion and mystery and managed to grab the attention of the audience. I found that Thorn was the most creative show of the evening. I was intrigued by the spotlight that lit only the dancing legs on stage. The spotlight on the beautiful leg movements created a really interesting ‘leg puppetry’ performance that kept me entertained throughout.
After the performance ended, I watched as parents held their children’s hands as they left the studio. The parents smiled and should their proud approval to their children; dancers emerged with confident expression on their faces, and the audiences left the theatre with satisfied expressions. For me, this was certainly a successful dance performance, one that also increased my knowledge on improvisational dance.
