Elephant in the Room
2-4 January 2009
Pentas 2, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre
By Alvin Jude Wong
The title of this performance is Elephant in the Room which caught my attention. I was trying to imagine the possibility of an elephant holed up in the experimental theatre. Elephant in the Room was presented by Kwang Tung Dance Troupe & Mind Production. Kwang Tung Dance Troupe was founded on 15 June 1980, which is 28 years ago, and their main objective is to cultivate young dancers and to create awareness on local performing arts to Malaysians.

There were two dance items in this production. The first performance entitled I can almost see the light which was choreographed by Jay Jen started with portrayals of animals such as a cute little piggy, a cheery little dog, an arrogant little chick and a lazy little cat running and chasing around.
Suddenly, these animals ‘transformed’ into pretty and handsome human beings. A few dancers came out from the shadows, moving to the classical music. To me, these dancers were trying to tell us that, we as human beings want everything including wealth, health and most vain, beauty.

The second performance, No Exit, choreographed by Amy Len started with a row of girls bowed with their hair covering their faces. The spotlight that focused on the legs kept most of the dancers’ bodies in the dark, casting an eerie scene.
Suddenly one of the dancers turned her head frantically in all directions. She continued to express struggle using her body with increasing tempo. Overall, I found both works satisfactory and entertaining. I was impressed that a contemporary production in Malaysia had 16 dancers and I hope that there will be other productions of this scale.
